The town borders Fairchild Air Force Base, the Spokane International Airport, and the city of Spokane (population 229,513). The county of Spokane has 559,775 residents, 2 community colleges, a state university, and two private universities.
What we believe and how we are governed:
We believe that “miraculous gifts” (gifts of healing, prophecy, word of knowledge, tongues) of the Spirit still exist, but we’re skeptical of the ways they are often expressed, and we do not actively encourage their use.
We agree to live and minister within the “significance of silence” framework (i.e., we will debate but not divide over certain nonessential doctrinal matters) is a strength.
We believe that baptism (immersion or sprinkling) ought to be required for church membership.
We believe that God created human beings uniquely in His image as male and female, and He has designed marriage to be a covenantal relationship between one man and one woman. We believe that sex outside of the marriage covenant is never acceptable.
Our church’s position on divorce and remarriage for a Christian believer is if divorced on grounds of the spouse’s infidelity or desertion, remarriage is permitted.
Our church believes that homosexual behavior is always contrary contrary to the teaching of Scripture.
We believe that abortion is a sin, the taking of a human life created in the image of God.
The church is governed by corporate congregational discernment of God’s will led largely by a team of a pastor, an associate pastor, and elders. Leadership is generally provided by lay and ordained leaders who function as equals. The Senior Pastor serves as "an elder among elders." The church is elder-led and congregationally affirmed. Our church’s position on women in ministry is that it is complementarian: there are to be some differences in ministry roles based on gender. Women’s involvement in leadership and teaching positions is that all such positions including deaconess, are open to qualified women, except pastoral and lay leadership (e.g., deacon or elder).
Our Church Ministry:
Believers are the primary audience served by our church. We are in a suburban zone bridging a medium sized city and extended agricultural areas, we have many active duty and retired military in the area. Our church building (dedicated in 1960) is one of the oldest still in use facilities in the city. The Senior Pastor will help focus remodel/building program to ensure continued ministry for future generations. In our church, the focus of the Sunday service (the main weekly worship event) emphasizes seekers and believers.
The worship team provide for the musical portion of the service. The Senior Pastor delivers a Biblical sermon (typically 30-40min) that while seeker sensitive is primarily focused to current followers of Jesus Christ. Occasional "topical" or "holiday" themes are acceptable, but primary sermon teaching is exegetical in form. Our worship style is mostly contemporary, but with a flair of diversity. Typical set has drums, guitars, keyboard, and vocalists. Classic hymns, specialty instruments, and so forth are mixed in periodically.
The Sunday message purpose is evangelism and edification balanced, typically preached through a book of the Bible, and application is just as important as “education."
Spiritual growth is encouraged informally, through programs for a few groups: Men's and Women's small group Bible Studies, regional multi-church Christian leaders discipleship/intern program, pastor-led focused discipleship/mentoring for developing future elders/deacons.
The practice of Charismatic gifts are neither encouraged nor prohibited.
We practice church discipline (or response to sin) to frequently intervene; using the Matthew model intervention is done early at the lowest level possible (between individual believers). Occasionally an issue will rise to elder/pastor intervention level.
Strategies to reach the lost are equally through friendships and programs and strategy; Sermons are posted on-line, Harvest Party and VBS outreaches, clothing giveaway ministry, and small group connections.
While our church encourages cultural and ethnic diversity We do not pursue diversity for diversity sake. The Gospel is for all of humanity. We have hosted an "ethnic congregation" and continue to seek avenues to bring the lost to salvation no matter where they are found.
In response to social needs such as racial reconciliation, poverty, homelessness, public education, and so forth, we encourage both church-based and personal social action. We facilitate a clothing giveaway ministry and partner with other churches/organizations for the local food bank (2nd Harvest). While not currently active, we have led a "Celebrate Recovery" group.
Our church’s focus on ministry is both local and global; Individually, congregationally, and with other churches we reach out to meet local physical and gospel needs. We also support missionary teams in both India and Guatemala.
We believe Church planting ought to be actively pursued by stewarding prayer, money, resources, and people toward planting new churches, and We are the only church in the District/region to have planted (full re-start) a church in the last couple decades. Together with other like-minded churches and District/Regional emphasis, we are preparing for a reawakening in church planting.
