Our History
Montavilla Church was founded in 1952 when members of a Sunday School class at a nearby church were led to plant a new class located in the Montavilla neighborhood. In just a short time, this small group of believers outgrew their rented space and purchased the plots of land that the church building humbly occupies today. Groundbreaking for the first phase of construction began in 1953, with the newly built sanctuary holding its first official service on Easter Sunday, 1961. Additional growth resulted in participating in a church plant now known as Grace Community Church in Gresham, Oregon, in 1981. This year we welcomed an Interim Hispanic Pastor to our staff and have cherished a real sense of family with our Hispanic congregation since long before their official incorporation into our church family in 2006.
Several additions and modifications to our church property have been undertaken since our early days as a church, including an additional outbuilding which currently serves as the weekly meeting space for our youth and three other houses/structures on either side of the church utilized for various purposes such as temporary housing for missionaries or other families in need, classes and meetings.
From our beginning in 1952 until now, Montavilla Church has had four Lead Pastors. Our current Pastor was welcomed to lead our congregation in 2023 and began serving in early 2024. This followed the retirement of our previous Senior Pastor, now serving as Pastor Emeritus, having served our congregation faithfully since 1985. Our previous Youth Pastors for Middle School and High School, each served in their positions for 20 years and over 15 years, respectively. Montavilla Church has been blessed by the consistency, commitment and investment that these individuals have displayed over their long years of service, pouring their hearts and the love of the Lord into every relationship.
Our Ministries
At Montavilla Church, we have been intentional in creating ministries to connect and strengthen relationships within our church body as well as within our community. There are men’s and women’s leadership teams and ministries that span all age groups, from our youngest children to our eldest elders– and to those with health concerns or aging-restricted levels of participation. Working diligently with community leaders, safe spaces are created for conversations surrounding real-time topics, collaboration with local law enforcement and other community services and we have a decades-long relationship with the nearby elementary school, actively supporting their teachers, staff, students and their families. There is provision of Sunday morning childcare for the youngest children, classes for elementary ages, an all-ages-welcome pre-service prayer time, mid-week Bible studies, opportunities for young families to connect and encourage one another and mid-week meeting of our youth group for grades 6 -12. Newly-formed community groups gather on a weekly basis to study God’s Word and build new relationships. Additionally, several events are coordinated throughout the year that include retreats, camping trips, a neighborhood clean-up weekend, VBS, Trunk-Or-Treat and mission/outreach events that provide opportunities to serve within our city and around the world.
