Woodstock Bible Church Pastor Job Description
Who We Are
Woodstock Bible Church is a community of born-again believers who seek to worship, serve, and glorify God. Our church places emphasis on the importance of Scripture and draws those from the community who appreciate a welcoming, close-knit faith community. We seek to honor God’s word by living in Christian community, encouraging fellowship and mutual edification, and proclaiming Christ to our surrounding community.
Our congregation is situated in the Woodstock neighborhood of SE Portland, where the church has been since 1954. We are a small church of less than 50 members that is currently led by bi-vocational leadership consisting of an elder board, preaching ministers, and deacons. Through member agreement and the Holy Spirit’s leading, we are seeking assistance in the pastoral ministry by opening a role for a full-time, paid pastor to serve the congregation and walk alongside us as we seek to follow Christ.
Church History
Our church associates with the Apostolic Christian Church (Nazarene) of which there are 41 churches across the United States and Canada. Our small association of churches has its historical roots in the anabaptist movement of Europe, and to this day the association still upholds many anabaptist values and traditions, including believer’s baptism and a stance of non-resistance. Other local church distinctives include the following:
-An emphasis on fellowship and hospitality, both within the church and within our association of churches.
-A high view of Scripture, believing it to be the inerrant, revealed word of God. We take seriously the Scriptural call to obedience through surrender and submission to the Lord Jesus, who commands men everywhere to repent of their sins by faith and receive the free gift of salvation.
The Role
Woodstock Bible Church is prayerfully seeking a Spirit-led pastor to help in the following areas: preaching, pastoral ministry, and organizational support. We are looking for a candidate who understands small church dynamics and who has a desire to understand the city of Portland to effectively minister and speak Christ’s truth. Ideal candidates would be trained in Biblical studies, expository preaching, and pastoral counseling. More importantly, the candidate would have a pastor’s heart- caring for the flock and equipping each member of the church to be active in ministry inside and outside the church's walls.
Specifically, the job will entail the following responsibilities:
1. The pastor will assume the primary preaching responsibilities for the church; however, we envision him serving on a monthly rotation with other members of our leadership who will also preach periodically.
2. Additionally, the pastor will meet regularly with our leadership team (elder board, ministers, and deacons) as well as individual members to discern the needs of the church, to help administrate its activities, and to support its spiritual health.
While we recognize the need for our church’s continued growth towards maturity, the candidate should be willing to walk alongside us as we humbly seek God’s direction together.
Qualifications
First and foremost, the ideal candidate will be qualified according to the principles established in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:7-9. We would prefer that the candidate have some seminary training, ministry experience, and a strong theological grounding consistent with the traditions of conservative, orthodox Christianity. While an anabaptist background is not required, applicants should have an underlying respect for our faith tradition. Candidates must be willing to support the Woodstock Bible Church’s statement of faith (Statement of Faith will be provided upon request).
Compensation
This position has an annual base salary of $63K-$78K (not including a potential housing allowance) depending on experience and education. Additionally, the church will pay for continued education and a pastoral ministry budget allowance that covers meals, fuel, etc. A stipend is available to assist with relocation expenses.
To Apply
Send your resume and two or three sermons (audio or video links are acceptable) and any additional sermon notes to elder@woodstockbiblechurch.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
